Mao Zedong was a great Marxist, proletarian revolutionary, strategist, and also a great social investigator. All through his life, he greatly loved and attached great importance to social investigation. His success in combining the universal truth, Marxism, with Chinese objective reality and in endowing Marxism with Chinese characteristics theoretically and practically most important of all lies in that he made a systematical and careful social investigation of the Chinese society. His rich theories and practices in social investigation are practically significant to the solution of new situations and new problems in our comprehensive construction of a well-off society and in the creation of a new situation in our socialist cause.Making and studying social investigation has a unique position in Mao Zedong's great life and is a special and important component of his glorious cause, It was the forceful weapon in his fighting against subjectivism, dogmatism and formalism, "was significant, even decisive to his success in combining the universal truth, Marxism, with Chinese objective reality and solving problems in Chinese revolution" (Gong Yuezhi, Peng Xianzhi et al: Mao Zedong's Reading Life), and was the secret and magic weapon for his brilliant achievements in his life.Mao Zedong went into the society and assiduously made intensive investigations and studies. In more than 50 years of time, he made his footprints all over China in his social investigations from such small ones as in a family, a village, a township and a county to big ones such as in counties or provinces. In fact, he made so many social investigations that only those recorded have amounted to almost 100. It was based onintensive investigations and studies that Mao Zedong successfully combined and unified the basic principles of Marxism with Chinese objective reality. Further, he founded Mao Zedong Thought, which focuses on being practical and realistic, following the mass line and acting independently and with the initiative in one's own hands, initiated a new road, the countryside encircling the city, for the Chinese revolution, and comprehensively expounded the basic theories of the new democratic revolution, which clearly showed the correct way for the Chinese revolution and was the significant ideological guarantee for the success of Chinese revolution. It was also based on intensive investigations and studies that Mao Zedong made preliminary but very valuable exploration for the building of China's own socialism and raised a series of instructive theories and principles, which is the theoretical and practical basis for us to find the way to build socialism of Chinese characteristics and for the foundation of Deng Xiaoping Theory.Mao Zedong not only had rich practical experiences in, but also left volumes of works on social investigation. Among these works, only those reflecting or recording one particular investigation have reached 18, and there are many more of those papers enacted and drafted on the basis of investigations and studies, and those articles closely related to or popularizing and theoretically expounding investigations and studies, such as: Analysis on Classes in China, Report on Investigation in Hunan Peasant Movement, Land Law of Jing Gangshan, Combating Bookishness, On Investigation in Countryside, On Ten Major Relations, On Problems of Dealing Correctly with Contradictions among the People, etc. Among his works, 17 are reports on investigations or articles on and papers enacted on investigations and studies, which are included in Collected Works of Mao Zedong's on Investigations in the Countryside, and are the concentrated reflection of Mao Zedong's Theories and achievements in investigations and studies. "In history, no other statesman has left later generations such rich and colorful collected works on investigation as Mao Zedong did, neither did any other leader in his times." (GanYuewen, 2001). All these are the valuable treasures Mao Zedong has left us, which are worth our systematic study and summary.Based...
