Faced with the failure of the containment, the U.S adjusted its global strategy at the end of 1960's. Detente was used, as a means, to confine the Soviet Union's expansion by the Nixon administration. Meanwhile, the geopolitical contention, not the ideaology, became a key factor in the making of the U.S global strategy.Since 1967, the Middle East had been a main arena of U.S-Soviet competition. There were continuity and discrepancy as well, in the Middle East policies of Johnson and Nixon administration. The U.S Middle East strategy changed according to the global and Middle East political situation development. Before the October War the U.S had tried to stop the Soviet Union from advancing south by keeping Israel superior to her Arab rivals in strength. While after the October War, driving the peace talks between Egypt and Israel became the priority of the U.S Middle East policy. By leading the Middle East peace talks, the U.S successfully drove the Soviet Union out of Egypt, which made the U.S hold strategetic superiority over the Soviet Union.
