The process of modernization requires the transformation from traditional personality to modern personality. Under the circumstances of modernization constructions, shaping modern personality is becoming increasingly important and exigent. Modern personality should possess the spirit of exploration and innovation, courageously participate in competitions, and be good at cooperation; should have independent characters, firm self-confidence, and strong sense of responsibility; should be aware of self-esteem and respects to others. As a practical social activity aiming at educating and training people, ideological and political education is driven by it's nature to shape modern personality. Both the history and the reality have provided adequate evidences for it's focus on shaping modern personality. Ideological and political education is playing a particular function in the process of shaping modern personality. It may guide the educates to build their own spiritual homestead in the involuted and complicated modern society; improve their capacity to accustom modern world; better harmonize the relationship between individual development and social development and promote their comprehensive growth until the perfect personality. During the current process of China's modernization, we should make a sufficient use of ideological and political education in shaping modern personality. We should start with a brand new conception of education and set about constructing the ideological and political education system to shape modern personality in terms of improving education measures and building education environment.
