Retaliation is the last resort in the implementation of the Dispute Settlement Mechanism of World Trade Organization (WTO). It is significant in the realization of dispute settlement. The study on how to properly apply the rule of retaliation is of great practical importance for maintaining China's right under the framework of WTO. This paper studies on the application of retaliation through introduction and analysis of the existing research results.This paper consists introduction, four chapters and conclusion. Chapter I defines retaliation through examining the expression and the rules of retaliation in DSU of WTO, and its similarity and difference with retaliation in general international law. Chapter II analyses the systemic value of retaliation from the perspectives of its aim, mechanism design and through game theory. Chapter III studies basic rules on the conditions, fields of application, the procedure and the forms of retaliation. Chapter IV enumerates insufficiencies in the rules of retaliation and gives remedial suggestions.On the whole, the paper argues that the rule of retaliation, as the last resort of dispute settlement, is of great importance to the effective operation of the whole dispute settlement mechanism. But precaution and proper use are necessary when resorting to retaliation.
