With the development of a new round of curriculum reform, the changing of teaching style gains its importance. When referring to specific targets, Basic education curriculum reform puts it in the first one that "changing study style, promoting autonomous learning". From the point of view of teaching, autonomous learning is not only an effective way of learning, but also the goal teaching trying to achieve. Researchers at home and abroad have carried on various and multi-level researches on autonomous learning, putting forward a variety of different theories, but the amount of research on the situation of developing students’autonomous learning in senior school English teaching is less, therefore, this thesis embarks from the two aspects of teachers and students to study on this issue.Based on cognitive learning theory, humanistic learning theory and constructivist learning theory, the author has carried out a two-month investigation in Nanjing Xianlin foreign language school to find out the current situation through questionnaire, interview, observation, etc. This investigation attempts to solve the following problems:1) teachers’ attitude for toward English autonomous learning;2) teachers’action to cultivate students’ autonomous learning ability;3) high school students of the actual status of autonomous learning ability;4) the problems existing in the process of cultivating and its solutions.Through data analysis and discussion, the author has drawn the conclusions as follows:1) high school English teachers show a positive attitude towards autonomous learning;2) in the teaching process, teachers can use various means to cultivate students’autonomous learning ability;3) as a whole, the actual situation of the high school students’autonomous learning ability is good, but there are individual and gender differences;4) there exit many problems in teachers’teaching process, but advantages as well. On this basis, the author proposes some training strategies, hoping to improve the ability of English autonomous learning with the joint efforts of schools, teachers and students.
