From time immemorial, religion has had a huge impact on people and Christianis without exception. Since Christianity was introduced into China, and due to itsstrong exclusiveness and desire of putting the common doctrine ideal into reality,Christianity has been often banded together with modern colonialism. After theOpium War, Through the protection of the unequal treaties, Christian missionariesswarmed into China to carried out the mission. After a variety of resistance, themissionaries chose to create schools as the breakthrogh of invading China. YunnanMissionary schools were arised under such circumstances.According to collect, collate and analyse the existing files and documents ofYunnan Missionary schools, this article studise the development history as well asdistinguishing feature on educational teaching management of Yunnan Missionaryschools. On this basis, the article preliminarily discusses the impact which made bythe Missionary school to the modern society in Yunnan. This paper is divided intofour parts:The first part discusses the background of the modern Yunnan Missionaryschools. Missionaries came to China for realizing their purpose——"lead China toGod". Therefore, Missionary shool was an expedient which was adopted underintense conflict of national edcation, and its subjective aim was to expand themissionary activities. At the same time, modernization of Chinese education wasspeed up and many state schools were established rapidly, which spurred theChristian to value its Missionary school education.The second part states the evolution of modern Yunnan Missionary schools.Base on the rules and the trajectory of Missionary school, Yunnan Missionary schoolsare divided into the start-up stag(e1881-1900), the phase of adjustmen(t1901-1921),the mature period(1921-1949)and the decline period(1949-1952). Meanwhile, thepaper also lists the reasons and characteristics of arising of Missionary shools in eachperiods. The third part mainly discusses the teaching and management features ofprimary school, secondary school. The paper states the teaching characteristicsthrough studying Missionary schools’ educational purpose, teaching contents,teaching methods, teachers and students, and states the management characteristicsthrough studying Missionary schools’administrative management, funds managementand daily management.The fourth part is the Evaluation and reflection of Yunnan Missionary schools.This part is divided into three sections. The first section evaluates the Missionaryschools’ contribution to Yunnan society and education from a positive view. Thesecond section assesses the Missionary schools’ historical limitations from a passiveview. The third section discusses the enlightenment that gave by Missionary schoolsto today’s schools.The research analysis Yunnan Missionary schools in a comprehensive andobjective way from the macro perspective. This paper can also provide reference incomprehensive understanding and study of Yunnan local historyas well as YunnanMissionary schools’ modern educational history.
