Japanese social education has experienced changes for almost seventy years since it was set up. From the initial citizenship education under authoritarian states to the present system which aims to cultivate the democratic country citizens, Japanese social education has altered thoroughly. With the purpose of developing students’ citizenship, current Japanese social education emphases on training students getting used to globalization. Meanwhile, middle school education is regarded as the key period in the developing of citizenship. This study focuses on exploring the ways of cultivating students’ citizenship, facing the present globalized society.Utilizing the existing Japanese learning guidance, social textbooks and teacher’s guide books, this study probes into the relationship between government policy and school classes. From the discussion above, some findings about features of current Japanese social education system are as follows.(1) As the aim of Japanese middle school cultivating global citizenship, citizenship is promoted at full blast, especially concentrating on citizenship in global environment.(2) In the Japanese middle school education, the whole content of education forms under the guidance of global citizenship. After learning history and geography, the knowledge of citizenship is taught in the way of solving problems.(3) As the p roach of cultivating global citizenship in Japanese middle school education, though and way of thinking are emphasized.
