Recently in the field of language teaching, SLA researchers focus more and more attention on a new theory---Lexical Approach. Lexical Chunks possess both lexical and grammatical character. Chunks can be stored in human’s memory system as a unified whole. It is the smallest part of the language when it is input, remembered, stored and output. It can be directly retrieved in English writing. It can ease learner’s pressure in time-limited writing and make their writing more accurate, authentic and fluent. With years of teaching students of Junior 3, the author has realized the students’ writing ability is poor. They can’t express themselves accurately, fluently, authentically while writing. Lexical Approach offers a new way of solving the problem. Therefore, the author does an experiment. It involves 100 students coming from Yizheng X X Middle School in Jiangsu Province,50 students in each class. One of the two classes is designed as an EG and the other CG. In this experiment, the students in CG is generally taught in the traditional way while those in EG is instructed with Lexical chunks. It takes half a term to do it. With the application of Lexical chunks, the research questions are as follows:(1) How will the application of the Lexical approach influences students’writing points? (2) How can the Lexical approach improve the students’ level of using the lexical words? (3) How will the Lexical approach influence the students’ interest and self writing ability? Writing tests are used as a measure. It includes pre-and post-writing tests. The writing test papers are marked by some experienced teachers according to the writing requirements. The author has contrasted and analyzed the scores of the two tests and the amounts and the types of the chunks and, at the same time, the author draws the conclusion from the feedback of the survey and the interview to know about the changes to the students’ interest and writing ability. The results of the experiment indicate that:(1) enlarging the input of the Lexical chunks is benefit to the students’ writing points. (2) The Lexical approach improves the output of their Lexical chunks. It can help students in EG use Lexical chunks more smoothly and accurately in their compositions. (3) The Lexical approach helps students overcome the influence of their mother tongue and level up their interest in writing and make them be more confident of their autonomous learning ability.
