College and university teachers not only bear the mission of propagating the doctrine,imparting professional knowledge,resolving doubts, and cultivating qualified builders of and reliable successors to the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics, but also the responsibility of enhancing the scientific and cultural quality of the whole nation, of improving the level of college students’ political thoughts. Since China’s reform and opening up, along with impact of the multiple values brought about by economic globalization, university teachers’ life pattern, consumption idea,idea and value orientation have all changed remarkably. How to resolve the problems and challenges under the new situation becomes a major topic in today’s ideological and political education of university teachers. In the study of the problems of university teachers’ ideological and political education, this paper adheres to the idea and method of combining Marxist theory with practice all the way. It not only clarifies the connotation of university teachers’ identity and their ideological and political education, but also points out its characteristics. Further more, it carries out an analysis to the problems of ideological and political education of today’s university teachers, and puts forward solutions correspondingly.There are four sections in this article. The first part is the introduction. In the introduction, firstly the purpose and significance of the proposition of "research on university teachers’ ideological and political education " are elaborated and then the literature is reviewed, generally demonstrating the dynamic and direction of the current academic research. On this basis, the author explains the basic methods and main innovation points of the study. The second part is about the characteristics of university teachers and the necessity of research on their ideological and political education. This part probes into the connotation, significance and current situation of university teachers’ ideological and political education. The third part is about the guiding ideology, basic principles and main contents of university teachers’ ideological and political education. The demands by the central government of university teachers’ ideological and political education are discussed. The fourth part mainly studies measures and suggestions to strengthen university teachers’ ideological and political education in the new period, and it can be mainly divided into four aspects. One is about the deepening of content of university teachers’ ideological and political education; the second is about the expansion of the approach to university teachers’ ideological and political education; thirdly, it puts forward the innovation of method of university teachers’ ideological and political education; fourth, it puts forward the institutional guarantee of university teachers’ ideological and political education.
