After the civil war ended in 1865, the United States government wanted to change the Indians’ social and economic structure and cultural patterns, so that they had the same way of economic life and making a living on convergence with the white, the U.S. government referred the matter of " solving the Indian problem" to the important agenda, Starting the comprehensive assimilation of indians, land reform and education reformThe dissertation is composed of five chapters.Chapter one,expounds the background of the assimilation education of Indians, including ideological origin, migration policies and the establishment of reservation system and < Dawes Act > and so on, reveals the historical inevitability of the American Indian assimilation education is practiced in this period.It reflects the white European civilization always plays a leading role in the white’s ideological and Indian civilization is behind the advanced form of civilization, and Indian civilization needs to be completely destroyed and replaced.Chapter two,discuss formulate and content of the federal government policy that have an influence on assimilation education.It summarizes its general principles and essentials and its goal of transforming the Indians to whites,economically and essentially solving the Indian problems and guaranteering the enforencement of land allotment and related law systems.Chapter three elaborates the implementation of the assimilation education, including the increase of annual funds for schools,the enforcement of forced education and English-only education and the quick development of off-reservation boarding schools.Which focuses on the implementation of the three types of boarding schools and English-only education policy.Chapter four, Analyse the results of the Indian assimilation education results and analyse the impacts.
