English writing is an important part of English learning and plays a great role in modern English teaching. However, it is also a weak link of English teaching. How to improve students’ English writing has become a hot topic in recent years. Numerous researchers have studied the influence of teacher’s feedback on English writing at home and abroad. Finally, they reach a consensus that teachers feedback is useful for English writing. But the conclusion has not been established that which one is better between direct feedback and indirect feedback for English writing.The research is an empirical study, carrying out comparative study of correction effect on English writing between direct feedback and indirect feedback. According to process approach,the researcher adopts the form of feedback and correction to study the problem in English writing. The researcher divides 72 senior school students in Grade Two(in the same class) into two groups: the direct feedback group and the indirect feedback group. Each group has 36 students. Then the researcher takes teaching experiments lasting for 8 weeks. Firstly, the researcher asks students to write an English composition according to the requirements of teachers; Then, teachers make a feedback to students’ composition with different feedback forms,taking a direct correction form to the direct feedback group and underlining the errors to the indirect feedback group. Then, teachers return the compositions to students and ask them to correct their compositions according to the teachers’ feedback. Lastly, teachers make the other judge to students’ composition, investigating the influence of the teacher’s different feedback types on the self-correction effect of English writing.After doing two months’ feedback experiment, the researcher make a questionnaire about teacher feedback. The research shows that teacher’s feedback benefits English writing, especially indirect feedback. Both direct feedback and indirect feedback promote English writing from language form and language content aspects. English level affects the understanding of teacher’s feedback to some extent.Because the time is limited and the group of subjects is so few, so the research still needs further improvement and development to make up the deficiency. The researcher continues to study the influence of teacher’s feedback on English writing in further teaching process, using various feedback and catering for all abilities to improve their English writing gradually.
