A Qualitative Study On The Identity Of Sub - Cultural Groups In Native Rock

This research takes group identity of local rock subculture members in Kunming as the theme, mainly aimed at discussing reasons for group identity of rock enthusiasts towards rock subculture and how rock enthusiasts maintain group identity towards rock subculture and how to win and keep the identity of subculture identity from rock subculture group.Grounded theory from the qualitative research was applied as the research method and took gathering place of rock enthusiasts in Kunming as the research field to carry out participant observation and depth interview. Theoretical sampling was applied in the depth interview and finally 10 rock enthusiasts in Kunming were interviewed with 150,000 transcription words. Three-level coding method was used to conduct data analysis to obtain two core codes: 1. Improvement of the sense of self-value of group members from rock subculture. Reasons for rock enthusiasts identify rock subculture group were mainly discussed. 2. Winning and maintenance of rock subculture identity. It mainly discussed how rock enthusiasts maintain identity to rock subculture group and how to win and keep the identity of subculture identity from rock subculture group.Two theories were concluded according to analysis:â… . Group identity of rock enthusiasts towards rock subculture can be mainly attributed to improvement of self-worth of group members when they join in rock subculture.The mechanisms for improvement of self-worth includes: 1. Low-value original features of rock enthusiasts in popular culture is improved after joining in the rock subculture. 2. The youth obtain additional personal value from joining in rock subculture. 3. Winning group identity. 4. Rock enthusiasts can improve self-assessment after gaining new culture and motivation.â…¡. In order to obtain and maintain identity of rock subculture, individuals need to make effort in two aspects: 1. To maintain positive identity to rock subculture group; 2. To obtain and improve their own subculture identity from rock subculture group. There are two major approaches to maintain positive identity towards rock subculture group: to constructer rock significance in the positive perspective and to make efforts of positive distinctiveness between internal and external groups.Approach that winning identity from rock subculture group is consistent with maintenance of internal group, and approach that improving identity from rock subculture group is adding cultural capital.
