According to the development trends of distance learning in the world and our country, web-based distance education will become a leading distance learning style. With the development of network technology and the demand of learning socialization, learning on web is becoming an important trend of distance learning. Nevertheless, in the traditional web-based instruction system, without the full consideration of user's requirements and individualities, the system self is centric, learners have to adapt to the system instead of adapted by the system. This kind of system doesn't carry out instructions according to people's learning rule, resulting in the poor interaction and bad learning effects. As web-based distance learning is adopted by more and more people, adaptability problems become more and more serious. Therefore, developing the web-based self-adaptative learning system is an urgent and important task for researchers and developers of distance education. In the face of the current situation, the thesis carries out theoretical and practical exploration and research on the web-based self-adaptive learning, respectively. To note, the study of this paper on web-based self-adaptive learning is established on the foundation of fully respecting the objective individual difference reality. Search for various learning abilities and individual character differences, and teach them according to their aptitude, which is the soul of self-adaptive learning.On the one side of theoretical research, under the relevant domestic and international researching background of web-based self-adaptive learning, I studied the relevant theoretical foundation of this field, and analyzed the meaning and essential characteristic of web-based self-adaptive learning, further elaborated the essential condition and inevitability to realize it, and its infrastructure. On the other side of practical research, regarding cognitive psychology as the theoretical foundation, this thesis researches and analyzes the characteristic of network learning environment, and the problems about self-adaptive learning implementation in the existing system, further puts forward the construction tactics of the web-based self-adaptive learning system. As a key part of this study, supported by present Internet environment, with WEB and multimedia key technology, I have researched and developed a tentativesubsystem of web-based self-adaptive learning system --Middle school English self-adaptive learning system. The web-based middle school English self-adaptive learning system, rotates aournd the center of learners, records and collects learning data using the network dynamic interacting technology. In the course of study, based on the item response theory and the algorithm of uniting maximal likelihood estimation, the system can automatically rewrite relevant study record parameters, establish the individual cognitive model for each different learner close to their actual level, and further analyze quantitatively and evaluate qualitatively individual difference character. Base on the dynamic updating individual cognitive model, advisers can guide and help different learners according to their individual character, while learners can adjust and control their own study activity dynamically, resulting in the genuine self-adaptive learning effects at last.The last chapter of this thesis looks forward to the prospective research direction of web-based self-adaptive learning system from the aspects of the development of web-based distance education, web technology, study theory, etc. and proposes some further improvement ideas about the development of the system.
