During modern time ,the change of the whole education system in China had began from late Qing dynasty. During the course in which the new education system was founded, Shanghai, with "Shanghai-Style Education" which represented the new kind of education mixed with western style and Chinese traditional characteristics , took the lead and established itself the most important position as the focus of the whole country's education. "Shanghai-Style Education", which was characterized with practicability, flexibility, openness and guidelines, turned a new page for Chinese educational modernization..The formation of "Shanghai-Style Education" is indivisible from its special position in the cultural communication between the East and West, and its leading position in the urbanization process of Chinese cities in modern times.After the 2 Opium Wars , Shanghai became the forward position of the exchange between the East and West by unequal treaties. Missionaries published newspapers and magazines , printed book, built schools. These activities widened the vision fields of Shanghainese in modern times , bringing them a new education model. In a dilemma situation, a few enlightened persons of Late Qing Dynasty Government began to develop Western-Style Education in 1860s. Shanghai in the front of exchange between the East and the West, took the first position in the Movement.Since the setup of foreign concession and the "mixed residing of Chinese and foreigners", Chinese came to know what kind of people the westerners were. With the immigration of western people, and the brought life style, the material civilization, such as their production tools, military equipment, household goods, matches, soap, electric lights, telephones, coal gas and cars, etc, were also brought into Shanghai by these westerners. Especially,people in Shanghai were marveled at the infrastructure in the concessions. In daily life and economical contact, people in Shanghai accepted not only the advanced economic experience but also the western municipal management concepts And gradually they formed their own citizenship concept. Not only did this promote the urbanization of Shanghai in modern times, but also it fostered the growth of "citizens". "Citizens" had their new culture demands and education demands. Based on the new western education model and the experiences of Western-Style Education, the style of "Shanghai-Style Education" was gradually formed.It can be concluded that the brought-in Western science and culture, and Western-Style Education Reform only provided a suitable "climate " for the formation of "Shanghai-Style Education" outside and inside respectively .It is the formation of Shanghai citizen society that offered a proper habitat for the growth of "Shanghai-Style Education".
