This paper carries on an investigation in compiling theory of the new teaching material of the course, Life Science for grade eight applied in the second curriculum and textbooks reform of Shanghai in theory and practice aiming at providing all-round popularization of the new teaching material with reference evidence. Firstly on the basis of describing the basic theory of teaching material, this paper analyzes the compiling principles, guidance ideas according as relevant theory of evaluation of teaching material compiling. Afterwards it commences on static analysis of the text of the new teaching material from the following four aspects: frame construction, content layout, format layout and compiling features, which indicates that the new teaching material is characteristic of the modernization, exploration and readability as well as the trend of humanism, localization and informationization. Then according to the statistic of investigating feedback data from students and teachers, it focuses on dynamic analysis of the practical operating position of the new teaching material. Among them the investigation at student emphasizes particularly on their interest, content, plate designing, operating position and learning method and so forth. While the investigation at teachers mainly includes the overall appraisals of the new teaching material, the embodiment of curriculum theory, teaching method and the extent of promotion students' makings of Life Science. According to the preliminary demonstration in theory and practice, the author thinks: the new teaching material of Life Science has made a beneficial exploration in many aspects, such as the education of scientific spirit, scientific attitude and point of value; helping students to grasp basic knowledge, basic skills and scientific method of Life Science; enhancing their abilities of thinking; developing students' personality and special skills and so on. The conclusion indicates that this new teaching material has played a positive function during the second curriculum and textbooks reform of Shanghai.
