The English teaching in junior highs in China is the foreign language teaching and falls short of the authentic milieu valued for language teaching in contrast with the second language teaching. As such, it is an effective bid for students to form the interest in English learning through English reading. Presently, many junior students do extra curricular English reading more for finishing their homework or dealing with English exams. In such case, after they have hurried through the above tasks, the practice of English reaching will end of itself. So, one of the targets of extra curricular English reading is to help students change the temporary reading activity into habitual and stable reading practice and arm them with positive attitude towards English reading.Positive attitude towards English reading presupposes healthy affect. Intrinsic motivation and over anxiety are two basic factors of affect with opposite natures. Thus, the English reading materials, which can help increase students' intrinsic motivation, the positive affective factor, and in the meantime decrease their over anxiety, the debilitative factor, will put students on the track of favorable emotions. What kinds of extra curriculum English reading materials can awake students' favorable emotions is the first issue the author gives the concern to.An integral reading material is composed of content framed up by topic and style; word; length; mode and reading exercise. So long as every part of a reading passage is designed emotionally, students' intrinsic reading motivation will be stimulated and over anxiety be decreased. Many Linguists have made a great number of investigations aimed at junior high students in China as to what kinds of English reading materials can screw students' intrinsic motivation and lower their over anxiety in terms of content, word, and length and have obtained valuable information. New English Curriculum Criteria adopt the conclusion and put forth that English reading materials with rich content, diversity of styles, moderate difficult level-in word and short passage will win students' favorable emotions. But the author of this paper feels a little difficult in finding much literature upon how to make the mode of reading material and that of reading material advance student's intrinsic motivation and give a close on the over anxiety. So, the author borrowed the questionnaire authorized by Wen Qiufang to survey the subjects coming from three junior highs in Beijing and have obtained the conclusion that reading materials with various modes cater to students' need of receiving information physically and affectively. An English linguist Bloom lines reading exercises into three modes according to hiscognition theory. The author surveyed the subjects through a questionnaire including the three modes and the author has been informed that flexible and practical applied reading exercises are in the circle of students' interest.Currently, there is a set of widely used extra curricular English reading materials accompanying junior high students' classroom English textbooks. The books were published by People's Education Press and Lingo Media, which claim to equip students with intrinsic motivation and decrease their over anxiety in English reading. The author used the results from linguists and the author's own investigations to have measured this set of books from different perspectives and found out if they achieved the aim they intend to, which is the second issue the author disposes of.To conclude, one of the most important principles deciding the success of extra curricular English reading materials for junior highs lies in the fact that they can suit and reflect students' emotional demands and cognitions. At bottom, reading itself is a process of illuminating and prompting emotions, a process of interactions centered by emotions. So, extra curricular English reading materials of all kinds should be aimed at creating a place where students are able to experience the pleasure of English reading and produce positive affe...
