Vocabulary teaching is always an important but often neglected component of Chinese teaching in middle school, which need to be studied and researched in a new perspective based on the new teaching program. This paper mainly analyzes the situation of vocabulary teaching, and discusses the vocabulary teaching in terms of theory and practice based on the new teaching program. In the theoretical level, three aspects have been mentioned to broaden the view of vocabulary teaching: to connect the classical Chinese with the vernacular, to connect Chinese with foreign languages and to connect standard Chinese with dialects, trying establishing aims of vocabulary teaching of middle school in terms of three aspects: knowledge and ability, process and methods, attitude and value. In the level of practice, it illustrates ways of improving vocabulary teaching of middle school in terms of making clear of the principles, better arrangement of content, improvement of methods and evaluation improvement. The principle of combination between vocabulary teaching and four other factors is proposed in this paper, that is, vocabulary teaching should take the features of Chinese vocabulary into account; more attention should be paid to the mental process of vocabulary learning; vocabulary teaching should be combined with practice of the teaching material and be conducted creatively.
