English vocabulary is the basic of English learning. It is one of the three language elements. The importance of vocabulary in English learning and teaching has given rise to the affirmation of experts from home and abroad. However, there is the problem of "time-consuming and poorly-efficient" in middle school English vocabulary teaching, Consequently, students can't make much progress in English learning because of the weakness of vocabulary teaching. This paper analyzes the actuality and deficiency of vocabulary teaching in senior high school.Some suggestions are pointed out in terms of vocabulary teaching methods and strategies in senior high school.Teachers should adopt efficient teaching methods to improve students'interest in vocabulary learning and help students eliminate the fear to learn vocabulary. After that,students will form a proper study method so as to continuously develop their independent learning capacity and master the vocabulary easily and effectively.This thesis consists of seven chapters.Chapter one briefly introduces the significance and outlines of the thesis. Chapter two covers teaching goals of vocabulary teaching in Curriculum Criterion in a senior high school and actuality and deficiency of vocabulary teaching. In chapter three the theory of vocabulary learning are discussed. Vocabulary learning strategies are discussed in chapter four. Chapter five introduces the application of English vocabulary learning strategies in senior high school vocabulary teaching. Chapter six makes comparisons of the instruction of vocabulary strategies and traditional vocabulary learning. The author makes questionnaires and personal interview before and after the experiment to test the effectiveness of the different vocabulary learning strategies. Finally, in light of the experiment and investigative results, the author indicates both the strengths and weakness o f this study.
