With the development of society and education, the traditional of teaching, which merely emphasizes knowledge transmission, has become out of date. The new times need talents with the ability to obtain knowledge autonomously and to maintain their lifelong learning. In China there is a saying, "Showing the way of fishing is much better than giving them fish."Therefore, a premium has been put on promoting autonomous learning both in the new curriculum and in practice. Learner autonomy can be considered as an important and necessary factor to promote English reform in China. It finds its importance in the present Chinese education. After explaining the definition of learner autonomy and its significance in the Literature Review part, the paper presents some problems that usually occur in the classroom of Senior Middle School. All these problems are critical for Chinese English teaching reform and have a great effect on the efficiency of English learning. The present English learning situation calls for promotion of learner autonomy. Only when learners meet some conditions such as high motivation, proper attitudes and knowledge about language learning can they be called autonomous learners and they perform autonomous learning. Learning strategies and styles that someone adopts can affect one's learning process and efficiency. So learning strategy training becomes very important in the classroom teaching of Senior Middle School. During autonomous learning, the teachers'role should not be ignored. Autonomous learning does not mean teacherless teaching, instead, it is learning under the guidance of teachers. Besides, self-evaluation and modern technology also play a very important role in the promotion of learner autonomy. Fostering autonomous learning is a dynamic process. It needs effort from both the teacher and students. The purpose this paper wants to achieve is to highlight the significance of learner autonomy and to draw teachers and other educators'attention so as to advance Chinese English teaching and learning by fostering learner autonomy.
