Category learning is a very important research field in cognitive psychology, the specific cognitive processes associated with categorization have been studied extensively by cognitive psychologists, and there are different opinions on which represent strategies are used in category leaning. Up to now, however, no theory recognized provides a better account of different experiment data.Using college students as participants, it included two experiments. Experiment one explored the effects of different complexity learning material on representing strategy of categorization. Experiment two explored the effects of different feature learning material with multi-manifestations on representing strategy of categorization and what the trend was when the number of manifestations increased. The results were as follows:(1)With the increasing complexity of learning material, strategy of categorization was changed from the rule-based categorization strategy to the exemplar-based categorization strategy. The participants would use the rule-based categorization strategy when the learning material is two -dimension MIP without an interruption dimension, and two -dimension MIP with an interruption dimension. But when the learning material is two -dimension MOP with an interruption dimension, the participants would use the exemplar-based categorization strategy.(2)The features of material influence the use of categorization strategy. The number of feature manifestations has no influence on the use of categorization strategy, but has influence on the result of categorization learning.(3) When the rule-based categorization strategy was used, increasing the number of manifestations would make category learning more difficult. When the exemplar-based categorization strategy was used, increasing the number of manifestations would make category learning easier.
