Problem categorization or problem representation task,as a measurement tool, has been borrowed from the field of cognitive psychology to the field of physical education research, and is widely used to measure students' physical knowledge structure. However, the existing classification tasks of physical problems are in the form of open-ended questionnaires, oral reports, card selection, etc.,which have such disadvantages as long response time, long data transcription time, heavy scoring tasks, and inconsistency among raters. This study aims to provide a new tool to diagnose students' physical knowledge structure for front-line physics teachers and education researchers in middle schools by exploring the similarity between the results of multiple-choice answer sheets and open-ended answer sheets in the classification questionnaire of physics questions. On the basis of the existing open-ended physical question classification questionnaire,we developed a multiple-choice question version of categorization questionnaire.A total of 212 students from three college physics classes of East China Normal University participated in the classification study of problems in the field of mechanics.Study 1 aims to explore the similarity between the results of multiple-choice and open-ended questionnaires in the classification of physical questions. The results showed that the multiple choice questions and the open-ended physics question classification questionnaire were very similar in the correlation analysis with the mid-term exam scores, the score cosine similarity test, the students' physics score differentiation, the score distribution of the matching questions, the correlation coefficient of the matching questions and so on.The purpose of study 2 is to explore the effect of picture on students' performance on the classification task of physical problems. The results show that pictures can improve the possibility of students to choose the relevant conceptual categories, and both gifted students and students with learning difficulties were promoted.Based on the results of various studies,to a large extent, the multiple-choice questionnaire for classification of physical questions can replace the open-ended questionnaire for classification of physical questions, and can be used as a supplementary tool for the quick and large-scale testing of students' knowledge structure.
