This paper examines the effects of the storytelling and enactment in anintegrated way on the development of narrative competence in 5 to6-year-old children. The theoretical resource is derived from therelationships between pretend play and narrative, it is performed byPaley, V.G, she wrote a book The boy who would be a helicopter: The use ofstorytelling in the classroom .The integrated way of storytelling andenactment consists of adult storytelling from a story of children's literature,adult-child joint discussion and pretense, and children enactmentindependently. This paper compared to control group children(n=24) under a controlintervention (conventional kindergarten practices without pretend play), andexperimental group children(n=19) who participated in the pretend play andnarrative practice show significant improvements in narrative length andlinguistic complexity, but show a marginally significant difference incoherence and comprehension. These findings provide further evidenceconcerning the role of pretense in the narrative development of youngchildren. This paper through empirical research to show that: it is very useful tosee children's enactment in pretend play and storytelling as complementarymodes of their narrative activity. Most children and even all children like themode, so storytelling and acting should become the universal learningmedium for children in kindergarten and even in early elementary school. The research major focus here only on the development of language skills, helps to promote the development of narrative and narrative related skills. But in fact, the impact of play and narrative in an integrated manner is a wildrange, such as cognitive, social, emotional developments. I hope that theresearch provoke and stimulate further developmental work on therelationships between play and narrative, a field of inquiry with importantimplications for both research and practice.
