Dated back to vassal states Qi and Lu in the Zhou Dynasty, Shandong Province is known as the land of courtesy and propriety, for education played an important role in the formation of Qi-Lu culture. Great philosophers like Confucius and Mencius endeavored to preach the teachings of Confucianism, and Jixia Academy witnessed the contention and flourishing of numerous schools of thought during the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States periods. From the sudden increase in private schools to the unprecedented boom of academies of classical learning, many historical facts demonstrate that traditionally people living in Shandong Province have always attached great importance to education. Focusing on typical examples, this paper discusses in detail the traditions of worshiping the sages and thinking highly of education in Shandong Province, explores the reasons for the formation, impartation and inheritance of these traditions, and reflects over the past experience and lessons that may provide inspiration and reference for today's modern education. It should be point out that the long-established tradition of promoting education in Shandong Province mainly refers to people's respect for or even obsession with education, which can be well illustrated by the schools funded by beggars and bandits. However, the promotion of education might not hold the leading position in the educational sector all the time. This paper will analyze and summarize the underlying reasons for the above-mentioned phenomenon.
