In 2001, a new English Language Curriculum for Senior High School was established in China, which challenged the traditional roles of English language teacher in classroom. What exactly, then, are the specific new roles for English teachers in senior high school guided by the new curriculum?Based on the defined concepts, the author firstly reviewed the relevant literature on the changing roles of teacher abroad and at home. Then the necessity of role changing of senior high school English teachers under the background of the new curriculum is discussed, with four new roles are reoriented from a theoretical basis , namely: organizer, prompter, participator and assessor, following which two questionnaires are distributed in two high schools of Guiyang and an investigation is done on the status of the changing roles of senior high school English teachers in classroom. Finally some problems in the process of teacher's role change are identified and an attempt has been made to deal with the issue involved by some suggestion. The major findings are as follows:1.English teachers need to be conscious of the language views in the new curriculum;2. English teachers are expected to familiar with the Language Teaching Approaches the new curriculum advocates. Besides, the last part draws a conclusion of the research and makes some suggestion related to the role changing of senior high school English teachers in classroom. To sum up, the author firmly believes that the research is of great significance in theory and practice. It enriches the literature of foreign language teaching on the one hand. On the other hand, it may serves as reference for the current English curriculum reform of developing areas in China.
