As multi-ethnic countries, there arise problems such as coexistence of complicated ethnic relationship, pluralistic cultures and religions in both Singapore and Malaysia. Singapore has been regarded as model of ethnic harmony while in Malaysia, constant ethnic disputes exist and ethnic contradictions appear one by one. The main reason lies in that greatly different ethnic policies are implemented in Malaysia and Singapore, thus they impact on ethnic relationship in a totally way. This paper intends to make a deep analysis and comparison on appearance of ethnic policies and their impact on ethnic relationship in both countries from the aspect of law, politics, economics, education, culture and religion in order to illuminate the following principles. In a multi-ethnic country, the government must stand on the position of all citizens, consider benefits of all ethnic groups, implement policies of benefiting all ethnic groups, entrust all ethnic groups with equal legal positions and basic rights and equally treat all ethnic groups so to enable people of all ethnic groups to equally enjoy national resources. Only by this can we strengthen senses of belongings and attachment of all ethnic groups on the country so to finally realize goals of harmonious ethnic relationship, united citizens and prosperous country. With ethnic policies in Singapore and Malaysia as mainline, this essay discusses differences of general contents about ethnic policies and their different impact on ethnic relationship, concludes experience and lessons of coordinating contradictions between all ethnic groups in both countries so to expect to absorb nutrient and provide reference for other multi- ethnic countries to coordinate ethnic relationship well.
