With the development of science and technology, video monitoring system which used in the field of security has been a gradual transition from the analog system for the digital system with network function. And monitoring systems used in some special industries such as coal made a special request on the performance of the system, such as explosion-proof properties. How to implement network monitoring system is the main research direction of this paper.This paper presents the two solutions for video monitoring systems and they are both based on embedded technology. The one is communications between pan/tilt decoder/video encoder to host computer are respective. The other is both the analog pan/tilt and video decoder are connected to the embedded video server and then the video server communicate to host computer. The latter method is also equivalent to the transformation of existing network equipment.In the former method, the pan/tilt decoder performs functions of receiving commands through the Ethernet, parsing them and controlling motor actions. The core of the hardware system is ATmega128 which is a member of AVR family, and it completes Ethernet data reception by network control chip RTL8019AS. The software uses uIP protocol stack to receive network data, then it parses the commands and responses. Video encoder performs functions that video data stream capture, encode and transmission over Ethernet. Its hardware is a video processing platform based on the TMS320DM642. Its software is programming by RF5 framework, using resource of technical support that TI offers. It has all the functions which are need.In the latter method, the system builds based on video server, and analog pan/tilt decoder, camera. The system is controlled by PC software, and the software also can implement real-time video display. The main work of this part is to build an embedded semi-digital system, the monitoring system set up more flexible.This paper gives a detailed description of the hardware and software principles and design methods for the two methods, and the functions of each part are tested. Currently, the function of each part has been achieved, long-hour operation in good condition.
