At present, it's a popular subject for studying the technology of the Metroplitan area network (MAN) in telecommunication and computer communities, which apply to networks providing high speed transporting and muti-service and the coverage from metropolitan area to suburb.How to construct the metropolitan area network is still a difficult job, however. As an advanced layer 2 midium accss control (MAC) protocol based on fiber ring network, Resilient packet ring (RPR) technology is introduced and focused currently, which could transport sounds, data packets, and imagines efficiently on multiple physical layers (such as SDH, Ethernet and DWDM) with well flexibility and full robustness.Derived and enhanced from traditional SDH, multi-service transport platforms (MSTP) have the abilities of multiple services and protocols access and transport. It's developing request for 3rd MSTP that has been embedding RPR technology so as to make full use of the advantage of SDH and RPR in TDM and data packet services.This paper studies the principles of RPR technology and introduces how to design RPR protocol software in MSTP system for enhancing service ability of data packet. Finally, it analyzes the tests for RPR protocol module and RPR network and gives some advices about RPR and MSTP system design in the future.
