Multicast technology is one of the most efficient methods in solving Internet Multimedia Applications. Arranging multicast in Internet is a system project, the data-link layer, the network layer and the application layer need corresponding protocols. If any layer doesn' t arrange protocol, multicast will not realize.Because the Multicast research on the data-link layer is shortage. The paper brings forward IGMP Snooping and VLAN technology, and studies the multicast on the data-link layer deeply. The technology is efficient to restrain multicast traffic in a switched network. Multicast on data-link layer realizes truly. The paper includes three parts. The first part studies the technology of Broadcast and Multicast, and uses the EtherPeek testing packages on the campus network. It shows that Campus network based on the LAN switch technology decreases collision domain, but all hosts are within one broadcast domain still. Multicast' s packages are dealed with broadcast' s packages. This can consume a lot of bandwidth and the server' s resources gravely. The second part proposes IGMP Snooping protocol and VLAN technology, and goes into particulars about joining group, querying group and leaving group. Simulation results show that the multicast' s packages don' t flow in the form of broadcast. These are basis of getting smoothly video and audio. Multicast on the data-link layer realizes truly. This platform has low bandwidth overhead and avoids the traffic congestion.Based on these technologies, the third part uses H. 263 protocol and JMF technology , and gives the program of multimedia system on campus network partly. The platform has low bandwidth overhead . It makes video and audio transferring smoothly. The efficiency of Campus network is higher than before.
