In wireless self-organized network (Ad Hoc network), Media Access Control (MAC) Protocol, which defines rules of how nodes can share channel with each other, is a key factor of improving the performance of Ad Hoc network. Most of the former Ad Hoc network MAC protocols were designed for Omni-directional antenna systems. With the research development in antenna area, Smart Antenna, which could dynamically adjust antenna pattern in order to trace useful signals and suppress interference and noise, comes into researchers'sight. If smart antenna can be used in Ad Hoc network, it will drastically improve the network performance. This paper is dedicated to propose a new MAC protocol that can well utilize the advances of Smart Antenna system. In order to achieve this goal, this paper's main contributions are 4 fold:The related work in MAC area is thoroughly reviewed, especially for those which are based on smart antenna.Through the review and analysis of former work in Smart Antenna based MAC protocol area, a problem is found that happens in former protocols: The fact that channel reservation decision and the event of hearing RTS/CTS are bounded together, makes MAC protocol design a dilemma.Focused on resolving this problem, a new MAC protocol dedicated to well utilize the advances of Adaptive Antenna Array (a type of Smart Antenna) is proposed. In this new protocol: 1) Channel reservation decision and the event of hearing RTS/CTS are separated; 2) Channel reservation rules are newly redesigned; 3) Two items are added into RTS/CTS frame for nodes to make a channel reservation decision; 4) A new signaling frame, Beam Pattern Change(BPC) frame, is adopted in order to release the protocol aggressiveness. At Last, a simulation based on OPNET are carried out between the proposed protocol and other protocols. The results show that: the proposed protocol...
