The rapid development of wireless technology has doubtlessly enables its wide application in the areas like consumer electronics, agriculture and medical care. Actually the wireless communication and wireless internet service have already been popularized in enterprise level of industrial automation system. Meanwhile, the RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) has been widely used as the electronic tag in factory assets tracking and object identification. However, the wire-based fieldbus technology is still served as the basic networks in many factories, which raises issues such as high cost and aged cables thus posing the growing requirement for field level wireless technology. The currently applicable mainstream wireless technologies include WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) based on WiFi(IEEE802.11) and WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Network) based on Bluetooth (IEEE802.15.1) and IEEE802.15.4. For the factory field level information, the tendency of which turns out more periodic, less non-periodic and shorter. The low-energy IEEE802.15.4 standard is chosen as the field level wireless communication protocol because the adoption of IEEE802.11 standard and Bluetooth standard would cause the problems like low efficiency and high energy consumption. This paper presents the ideas of building the IEEE802.15.4 based equipment monitoring network and makes a relevant study regarding the network hardware and software with a focus on WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) application in industry field, particularly its application in equipment monitoring. The study could be summarized as follows:1. It discusses the features and challenges wireless technology faces in its industrial application, analyzes the characteristics and functional requirements of equipment monitoring system, as a basis of which the WSN based network system is designed and network equipments within the system are categorized.2. It designs and realizes the field level hardware platform for wireless node based on MCU and RF chip which has also contributed to the completion of relevant driver and channel access control software design. 3. It states the gateway ARM+Linux embedded system archtecture, analyzes the hardware platform structure with S3C2440 processor as its core and explains how the gateway software development platform is built, along with an introduction of modules design and realization in gateway application.4. It design experiments to test the communication capability and engergy consumption of wireless nodes, including the working environment impact to communication distance between nodes, the relations between the sent frame length and the time spent, the wireless node engergy consumption under different work modes. Besides, the gateway response time is also part of the test.
