Sustainable Urban Living Environment

Nowadays, the idea of sustainable development has been spread into manyfields, including economics, social, ecological, and so on. Many countries,international institutions, academic groups and persons have investigated intothis topic for a long time, and have made many achievements to the research,popularation, and implement of sustainable development. The research ofcity's living environment in this thesis, under the guidance of sustainabledevelopment, is an important part of the theory of sustainable development.The so-called city's living environment is the geo-community where peoplelive, and the base for people to survive and evolve. As the enhancement ofpeople's living standard and the arousal of ecological and environmentalconsciousness, people are paying more and more attention to the sustainabledevelopment of living environment.But the question do exists that there are many disputes in the meaning andestablishment of living environment in the idea of sustainable development.Most researches emphasize in one or two aspects, such as ecology,environment protection, architecture, etc. The research needs to be done in acomprehensive and macro angle of view, taking population, resources, socialand economic development, culture, etc. as a whole. This is the main purposeof this thesis.Based on the inspection of the history of sustainable development, this thesisdiscusses the necessities, definition and mode for the sustainable developmentof city's living environment. According to the author, a city's livingenvironment consists of many factors including social economy,eco-environment, methods of living and producing, methods of using anddeveloping resources, environment-protecting architecture, coordinativeculture, and so on. All these factors, independent and interactive, need to bedeveloped in a sustainable way for a city to establish a sustainable livingenvironment. This paper also investigates into the establishment of asustainable living environment on a city's level, designs a sketch picture.Finally, the author creates an evaluation standard system for the livingenvironment of a city. Different from other existing evaluation system, thissystem is trying to cover all points concerning living environment,emphasizing on the practical use rather than comparability. Each entity,government or development company or citizen, on each level, city orcommunity or architecture, can find suitable index in this system.This system is proved to be feasible by the case of Jinan city.
