Since 1980, insurance industry in our country has developed swiftly and violently. However, it still trails the average level compared with other countries in the world. Telling its own tale, the industry will put up a big potential developing space in the near future. Especially After joining in WTO, insurance industry in our country has being faced more intense market competition with both challenges and chances. In such living circumstance, if insurance industry wants to develop continuously, it must improve its competing power. So it is a must to discuss the efficiency of insurance industry here.The paper investigates the efficiency of the insurance industry in our country over the period 2002-2004. The sample consists of 25 firms including 12 life-health firms and 13 property-liability firms. The whole analyses use a two-stage procedure method. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is used to compute all kinds of efficiency scores at first and the next regresses the scores on variables that have great impact upon the efficiency. The stream of thoughts and structure are as follows. Section 1 gives a brief introduction. Section 2 discusses the frontier methods using in the resent study of efficiency and provides an over reviews on the study of insurance industry's efficiency. Section 3 investigates the efficiency of the sample from vary points of view. Section 4 analyzes the main influencing factors on the efficiency of insurance industry phasing in regression models optimization basing on the DEA score; while section 5 concludes the paper. Compared with other domestic researchers' study in this field, the main features of the paper lie in as follows. Firstly, considering of the status quo and characteristics of the insurance industry in our country, the paper takes proper input and output variables and estimates the technology efficiency, pure technology efficiency, scale efficiency and the return on scale. Meanwhile, the paper also calculates the super-efficiency scores in order to compare the efficiency DMUs, and from static and dynamic aspects to analyze the differences between samples and brings forward...
