In resent years, with the improvement of optical process and the increase of new optical materials, many kinds of zoom systems have appeared and the same good imaging quality as the fixed-focus systems. As a result, they have been widely applied to many fields, such as space flight, national defense, space research, scientific research, education, production, medical, health and electric production and so on.In this thesis, the general methods of zoom systems compact structure were analyzed and common designing methods of zoom systems were discussed. The initial structure was determined on these foundations, Then the optimization and analysis were executed, Eventually a negative compensation zoom system was designed. The optical design finally reaches the technical requirements. When the wave length is from 0.4358 to 0.6562μm, the focal length is from 30mm to 600mm.and the variable time ratio is 20, the relative aperture is 1:5, the image height is 4mm and the distortion is less than 5%, the system length is less than 480mm and the back focal length is more than 20mm. Furthermore, the image positions were compensated by slightly moving the separation of each fraction without the change of focal length. Eventually, a small pressure angle, steady and smooth cam curve was designed by a new optimum method of zoom cam curve, which was easily processed and a compact structure.
