This paper presents a FPGA design of a novel GPS IF signal acquisition and tracking circuits, which acquires and tracks the GPS L1frequency and C/A code without FFT and Costas loop. This paper presents a new method based on the frequency hopping. This approach not only gets the acquisition and tracking together, but also avoids using the FFT and Costas loop to greatly reduce the hardware cost. This paper introduces the principle of acquisition and tracking, and followed by some comparisons among the traditional acquisition and tracking algorithms. Based on these theories, new methods based on the frequency hopping have been proposed. Each program can achieve acquisition and tracking, and each of them has innovation compared with traditional program. At the same time, this paper introduces the program of recognizing navigation message based on phase transition. In order to verify the new algorithm offered in this paper, the GPS time and UTC leap-second information is extracted from the ephemeris and then turned to Beijing time, which is used to set a clock. The result shows that the output time strictly synchronized with the output of a normal GPS receiver in a second range.Simulation results and FPGA tests show that the proposed design works well for GPS IF signal acquisition and tracking and is promising for low-cost and low-power. The new design provides a good reference for the GPS receiver chips optimization design.
