Planar double-enveloping toroid worm gear drive is characterized by high bearing capacity, high transmission efficiency, long service life and so on. It is applied to a wide range of industries such as metallurgical machinery, mining machinery, rolling mill screw down, chemical machinery, and defense equipment. However, because of the working profile of planar double-enveloping toroid worm gear drive being a complex surface, of which manufacturing process requires high-precision special complex machine tools and special complex tools. At present, the domestic processing method for planar double-enveloping toroid worm gear drive mainly is the traditional dual generation method and the domestic manufacturing process is unsound and backward, which leads to the lower market sharing and the wide gap in performance from similar products abroad. Besides, it also restricts the high-precision and efficient development and the application of planar double-enveloping toroid worm gear drive. Therefore, how to achieve the high-efficient and low-cost machining for planar double-enveloping toroid worm gear drive is an important issue at present, and it is very urgent to research NC machining technology for the planar double-enveloping toroid worm gear drive to make up the shortage of traditional processing of dual generating method. In this paper, some researches are done for the technologies of solid modeling, tool path planning, post processing and machining simulation by using the forming principle of planar double-enveloping toroid worm gear drive, computer-aided geometric theory, NC machining principle, UG and its development tools, VC++, etc.. The Specific studies can be summarized as follows:1) Reviewing the research situation of the planar double-enveloping toroid worm gear drive, inferring tooth surface equation of the worm and the worm gear and describing the principle of NC programming, which laids a foundation for further study.2) NC programming preprocessing technology of planar double-enveloping toroid worm gear drive which including the three-dimensional solid modeling of the worm and the worm gear, the virtual assembly and the motion simulation is explored. In addition, the NC machining tool path planning algorithm of is also established by designing the processing program.3) NC programming post processing technology of planar double-enveloping toroid worm gear drive is discussed. And the corresponding virtual machines, post processing algorithms and the corresponding postprocessor are developed by analyzing the configuration requirements of the machine for the machining of the worm and the worm gear.4) Based on the above researches, NC machining simulation technology of planar double-enveloping toroid worm gear drive is discussed. And the virtual machines are established to simulate the machining process for the worm and the worm gear. The simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithms of preprocessing and post processing are correct and effective.In summary, the researches in this paper provide an effective way to realize efficient and low-cost processing for the planar double-enveloping toroid worm gear drive, and a theoretical foundation is laided for expanding the application of NC machining technology in processing of this worm gear drive.
