Abstract/Summary:
This paper investigates the finite-element simulation of ballistic impact on carbon fiber reinforced laminate composite. To study the failure mode of laminate composite under high-speed impact and master these numerical methods, A non-linear, explicit, three-dimensional finite-element code DYNA3D is used to simulate the response of unidirectional layers under high-speed projectile impact. The ballistic limit, residual velocity of the fabric are predicted and compared with those from experiment. It is found that damage mode is mainly about shear, compression, lamination and tensile; CDM is an effective constitutive model; lamina modeling and laminate modeling are overall feasible. To study the containment ability and failure mode of carbon fiber reinforced woven fabric aeroengine case, the gun test and the containment test are needed. Results show that the failure mode of case is mainly including shock, wedge, deformation, friction, lamination, tear and so on; It's irrelevant between resin strength and material performance; The energy case can absorpt about 3 times of which plate can. There are good agreement between numerical analysis and experimental results, verifing the numerical method can be used to estimate the containment ability of woven fabric structures. It yields a good basis for future work by understanding the methodology adopted and the experimental involved in this study.
