Magnesium is a kind of material which have lower density, higher strength-to-weight ratio than steel material. It is regarded as "green materials" in 21st century for its recycling utilization. Magnesium alloy have been widely used in transportation, 3C electronic products, aerospace and other fields. Strip casting of magnesium alloy is a new short process, low cost and high quality production techniques. However there is still some problems such as poor performance of the as cast plate in mechanical strength and formability of magnesium alloy strip. In the paper, casting AZ61 magnesium alloy with various element addition were selected as research object and their mechanical properties and microstructure of were systematically studied. Two kinds strips were used, one with addition of Ca content, the other with La and Ce element. These AZ61 strips were rolled and then the mechanical properties and microstructure were investigated. It is a little effect to microstructure of magnesium alloy that strips were homogenization treated before rolling. Uniform fine equiaxed grains were obtained in the rolled plate after annealing, which provided the basic condition of microstructure for further processing. The addition of low content Ca and RE (La, Ce) has certain impact on the microstructure and properties. The effect in case of addition of La and Ce is superior to that of Ca. Exist of a large of mount of precipitation in favor to increase the mechanical strength of the magnesium alloy plates.
