Coal is the subject of China energy structure. The production scale of the coal have been gradually expanded with the economic and social development. The frequent spontaneous combustion in the coal mine has been a threat to the worker life and the property security, and also been a barrier to the sustainable development of coal industry. Currently, there are several technologies have been used for fire extinguishing. The gel is one of them which has better extinguishing effects, convenient transportation, no pollution and low cost, and has been used widely and achieve good effect. Based on the analysis to current mechanism of coal spontaneous combustion and fire prevention and extinguishment techniques, many experiments have been done to study the phychemical and fire extinguishing properties. In this paper, the composition, microstructure and gelling principle of the sodium silicate, polymer gel, loess composite colloid and fly ash composite colloid have been analysed use the experimental methods, X-ray diffraction and Infrared Spectroscopy given in the GB/T 4209-2008(industrial sodium silicate). On this basis, a lot of experiments has been done aim to the gelling time, viscosity, intensity, water loss, infiltration, plugging effect, resistance of reaction and extinguishing effect of the sodium silicate, polymer gel, loess composite colloid and fly ash composite colloid. In these exeriments many equipments such as polymer gel osmosis device, ball whereabouts device, plugging device, fire extinguishing device, viscometer, temperature programming device and Gas Chromatograph have been used, and the gel's characteristics of the property and its changing laws have been got.The studies of this paper can provid basic data for revealing the further extinguishing mechanism of the gel, and provide theoretical basis for modification.
