The Research On The Semantics Features And Expression Of Sofas

The sofa is the most popular funiture in our life, that supports body directly and closely, meanwhile serves as something of adornment in house. Therefore, standard of sofa design has to be improved. This thesis plans to link the theory of semantics to sofa design, studying how to express each sense on sofa and trying to design sofa shape based on semantics idea, which, so far, contributes to explore new way of sofa design.Firstly, this article begins with introduction of the theories of semeiology and semantics, and selects six detailed senses, then, putting them into sofa design to reseach how to be displayed respectively. Meanwile,I generalize the most populur methods to express sofa senses separately,As a result of scanning and investigatting hundreds of products of the three leading sofa manufacturers in China. So far, semantics features and expression principlesof sofas have been investigated and understood primarily.Next, based on a living example of sofa design,the author dismantls a sofa into different parts or elements, each of which should be responsible to deliver conresponding sense, then, putting them together to a finished shape at last. It is proved by fact that the method is practical and effective,according to ideal sales volume in market. This effort is contributive to the business of sofa semantic expression.Finally, the paper also discusses relationship between modern commercial design procedures and semantic expression, and presents some opinions about it.
