Mineral oil pollution in water, seriously endangers the ecological balance of water and health of human beings. In recent years, with the expanding oil exploitation on land and sea, oil spilling produced by exploitation and transport, such as the U.S. Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Horizon platform explosion, Dalian oil pipeline explosions, oil drilling platforms ConocoPhillips Bohai oil, etc., all cause the widespread concerning of the community. The harm assessment and responsibility of Marine mineral oil pollution require the content of mineral oil obtained by real-time online monitoring. In this context, on-site, real-time, online, continuous monitoring techniques of the content of mineral oil in water increasingly attracts the attention of national environmental protection department. The traditional detection methods of mineral oil in water, such as gas chromatography, infrared spectrophotometry, non-dispersive infrared absorption method, are based on conventional on-site sampling, laboratory analysis of measurement processes, it is difficult to meet the requirements of on-site monitor of mineral oil in water. In recent years, Some on-line measurement techniques have been developed, In which UV fluorescence, UV-extinction method and light scattering detection methods ,belongs to physical optics methods, are real-time online methods, specially they are without chemical reagents, and have been the discussion and research focus of domestic and international researchers. This dissertation describes a variety of the current monitoring technology of mineral oil content, summarizes the strengths and weaknesses, and on these basis, proposes a new method of rapid detection of oil pollution based on Mie scattering theory. According to Mie scattering theory, we can identify different types of mineral oil, and determine its concentration by analysising of the small angle forward scattering light intensity and distribution of the mineral emulsion,. This paper has done experiments of oil drop size and distribution of diesel, crude emulsion which were preparaed by ultrasonic oscillation method with the help of Laser particle size meter analyzer, Mastersizer2000. The crude, diesel emulsion of different concentrations from 0 to 30ppm was measured in experiment, the linear coefficient is more than 0.99. The result shows that this technology is easy to operate ,with vitrue of high accuracy, short measurement time,no chemical reagents. This paper presents a feasible setup for the online monitoring of the content of mineral oil in water.
