The purpose of this paper is to develop steel flocking adhesive. The NewDazhong Co. Ltd has introduced the technology of producing flocked metal plate,while adhesive must be imported from Japan. So, the development of suitableadhesive becomes urgent needs.Before designing the formulations of adhesive, the production process offlocked metal plate was investigated, and a clear understanding about requirementsand performance of the flocking adhesive was acquired. Meanwhile, the Japaneseadhesive's properties were tested, including basic physical and chemical properties,amount of glue, curing temperature and time, bending processing properties and soon.Based on the completion of the above work and the consideration of propertiesof various adhesives, the adhesive should include the following features:water-based, curing at 100~150℃, can simultaneously with the metal surface andthe non-metallic nylon pile bonded firmly. Adhesive composition should include thefollowing three parts, part water-based emulsion polymer resin, additives sectionand the solid powder pigments and fillers.Then the above three preliminarily components have been selected in this paper.Due to excellent preformances of acrylic modified polyurethane emulsion incorrosion resistance, aging resistance, flexibility and viscoelasticity, this paperselected it as organic film-forming material of the adhesive. Then, thickening andtackifier additives were used to increase the viscosity and thickness of the emusion.As for the pigment, titanium dioxide was selected, due to its good coveringproperties. If necessary, addition of carbon black can be used to transfer theadhesive's color from white to gray. Based on the above three components,exploratory fomulations of adhesive has been designed and adjusted by flocking testresults. At last, we achieved an adhesive which has similar perfomances of Japaneseadhesive in the bonding strength, water resistance and stability, and better abrasionresistance than that of Janpanese adhesive.After analyzing IR test results of emulsion, thickening agents and mixture ofboth,it's found that thickening additive and emulsion form hydrogen bonds throughthe oxygen in C-O-C and amino hydrogen, which limit the free movement ofmicelles and change the viscosity of emulsion .The cost of the adhesive which developed according to the formulation in thispaper is lower than that of imported products and the adhesive can meet therequirements for flocking metal plate. While the cost is still slightly high, the mainproblem is the high price of polyurethane emulsion. In the future research, it's possible to reduce the cost of the adhesive through mixing other emusion. And howto reduce the cost of adhesive is the main content of next step of research.
