Many kinds of glass, ceramics and other hard or brittle materials have many special properties. So they are widely used in scientific field, such as laser technology, microelectronics, precision machinery and life sciences. But because of its poor processing performance, the traditional way of machining is difficult to be used when machining hard-brittle materials. The hard-brittle materials can be machined in plastic region under special conditions. But the current research in this area is not enough, so it is necessary to study the plastic milling process of hard-brittle materials.In this paper, the reach status of the plastic milling of hard-brittle materials in home and abroad will be summarized. By analyzing the actual phenomenon which is not totally explained, through in-depth study and submit, a scientific milling mechanism is proposed. A platform for micro-milling is established, based on which, a series of experiments are carried out. The mainly job of this study are as follows:1. First, by the analysis of the background and significance of the research, the study status of the hard-brittle materials is summarized, and the micro-milling of glass by ball end mill is specially presented.2. The basic mechanism of plastic machining on hard-brittle materials is described. The machining of glass is especially detailed. Some complex phenomenon which has not been explained is listed. A new milling mechanism based on the elastic recovery is proposed.3. Based on the maturity geometric model, combined with the specialization of the micro-milling, a new milling force model is established for the analysis of the milling process.4. In order to study the plastic milling process of the hard-brittle materials, and verify the milling mechanism and the cutting force model, a complete platform for micro-milling is created, and a series of experiments are carried out. Through comprehensive analysis of the trend of cutting force in milling process and the expansion of the crack, the theory is verified.5. By the analysis and experiments, the relationship between cutting force and milling status are summarized, and the milling mechanism is achieved, which provide guidelines for the following study.
