Nanochemistry is an exponentially growing research field in modern science that involves the synthesis and application of nanomaterials. In this thesis, we present our research on the development of novel platinum (Pt) based nanomaterials as the catalysts for the oxidation and reduction reactions.Nanomaterials synthesis: From reviewing the preparation of FePt, Pt and Pt@Fe2O3 nanomaterials, we synthesized a series of well-defined, homogeneous Platinum based nanomaterials by therm-decomposition and these nanomaterials were characterized by (HR) TEM, XRD and EDS.1. Carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation under mild condition: The catalytic activity of prepared Pt based nanomaterials was investigated in the oxidation of CO under mild reaction condition. These catalysts showed obvious catalytic activity when the temperature was raised to 50oC and the totally conversion could be obtained at 110oC.2. Direct hydrogenation of nitro-aromatics and one-pot amidation with carboxylic acid over Pt nanowires: Pt nanowires were demonstrated as heterogeneous catalyst for nitro-aromatics hydrogenation with quantitive conversions at mild condition. While using carboxylic acids as solvent under 1 bar hydrogen atmosphere at 100oC, nitro-aromatics were successfully converted to amide with satisfied conversion and selectivity. The Pt catalyst also showed high catalytic activity and stability. No obvious catalytic activity lose was observed after several time recycling. This method for hydrogenation of nitro-aromatics and direct amidation of nitro-aromatics with carboxylic acids are simple, economical, environmental benign and have practical advantages for synthesis of amines and imides without production of toxic by-products. 3. Oxidation of alcohol and alkene with Pt based nanomaterials: Various Pt based nanomaterials were also invested as catalysts for selective oxidation of alcohol and alkene. The reaction conditions as temperature, solvent, pressure were optimized. This observation was demonstrated that our Pt based nanomaterials showed dual catalytic abilities for reduction and oxidation reactions.
