Our country's energy structure is "rich in coal, oil-poor, less gas", thus it is suitable for us to develop the process of producing ethanol with coal and people pay more attention to fuel ethanol because of its higher octane and better anti-knock performance. This paper studied the reaction of acetic acid catalytic hydrogenation to ethanol with noble metal catalyst. The catalyst was characterized by BET; the effect of reaction conditions to the conversion of acetic acid and the selectivity of ethanol was discussed in an isothermal reactor; the kinetic equation was built.BET result showed that the surface area of the catalyst was 891.68m2/g which was very high. The experimental conditions were 160℃~240℃of temperature,3MPa~7MPa of pressure,0.3h-1~0.7h-1 of the volume space velocity of liquid acetic acid,5~22 of the mole ratio of hydrogenation to acetic acid. The results indicated that higher conversion and selectivity could be obtained in the conditions of higher temperature and pressure, the conversion of acetic acid at 240℃was close to the equilibrium one; with the increase of the space velocity, the conversion of acetic acid dropped slowly while the selectivity of ethanol had a trend to rise; the influence of the mole ratio was not obvious on the conversion, while improving the ratio of hydrogenation to acetic acid was in favor of the formation of ethanol. The parameters involved the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model were got by the parameter estimation method on the basis of the experimental data. The residual error distribution and statistic test showed that the intrinsic kinetics was suitable.
