A novel strong acidic ion-exchange fiber was firstly prepared by the Friedel-Crafts crosslinking and sulfonation of commercial PPS fibers, and the novel fibrous material had high exchange capacity and good chemical stability performance. On this basis, scanning electron microscope, elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and chemical titration means were used to analyze and characterize its physicochemical structure and properties, and various factors affecting Friedel-Crafts crosslinking and sulfonation reactions were investigated by optimization of the technological conditions. The results showed that through the moderate crosslinking, the chemical stability of ion exchange fibers can be improved effectively, and the exchange capacity of prepared novel fibers is rising to2.634mmol/g accordingly. The preparation of this fiber avoids complicated irradiation grafting process, the preparation method is operated easily and simply and is applicable for industrial production, so this kind of novel fibrous material has broad production and application prospect. The study on the adsorption propertis for Cr(Ⅲ) of the ion exchange fiber was initially completed. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of the ion exchange fiber is up to59.43mg/g for Cr(Ⅲ), which is far beyond the theoretical value33.96mg/g, the adsorption rate is very fast, and after six adsorption-desorption cycles its adsorption performances did not change obviously. Owing to the excellent adsorption performances, the ion exchange fiber could be expected to be applied in the treatment of waste water containing chromium. In addition, the adsorption behavior for p-nitroaniline of the fiber was systematically studied, with Fiban K-l ion exchange fiber as a contrast. The results have demonstrated that strong acid ion-exchange fiber based on PPS is a good absorbent for p-nitroaniline, whose adsorption capacity is signifcantly higher than Fiban K-l fiber under the same conditions. The adsorption process is exothermic and occurs spontaneously. Both the adsorption rate and the rate of recovery and recycling of the fiber are extremely high. Therefore, the ion exchange fiber has wide perspective and practicability on the treatment of waste water containing p-nitroaniline.
