The ion exchange fiber is considered as a new reactive and functional materials with excellent reaction kinetics property, various texture forms and high selectivity and more and more get attention in the field of environmental treatment, preparation of high purity chemicals, etc. In recent years, with the novel varieties of ion exchange and chelating fiber increasing continuously, study on different substrate and functional groups of ion exchange and chelating fiber has gradually become a hot spot. This paper has preparedion exchange and chelating fibers with excellent mechanicalproperties, as well as good adsorption performance based on PPS fiber. The main contentsare as follows:Firstly, a novel strong acidic ion exchange fiber was prepared via the nitration of 4,4’-dichloromethylbiphenyl, as well as following crosslinking with anhydrousaluminum chloride as catalyst, and sulfonation reaction on polyphenylene sulfide(PPS) fiber. The effects of temperature, time and catalyst on the crosslinking reaction were investigated. The strong acidic ion fiber could adsorb the cation dye MB, which showed fast adsorption rate, and the absorption capacity could reach 99.2% at the same time.Second, chelating fiber based crosslinking PPS fiber were prepared through chloromethylation, amination and N alkylation reactions. The effects of temperature and time on N alkylation reaction were investigated. The products in different periods were characterized by SEM, FT-IR and TG.Finally, the adsorption ability of chelating fiber for Hg(Ⅱ) was investigated. The effect of different parameters, such as pH, contact time and temperature, have been evaluated. The chelating fiber could be used at the wide pH range 1~ 6 and with the increase of solution pH the adsorption rises first and fall later, the maximum adsorption occurs at pH=3.01. And this adsorptive process was satisfied with the proposed kinetic modelⅡ, and the isotherm conforms to the model of Langmuir. The initial stage of adsorption major control steps is particle diffusion, the effect of liquid film diffusion of mass transfer is more and more important at last. Chelating fiber adsorb the Hg(Ⅱ)ischemical adsorption andis an exothermic process, which showed fast adsorption rate and high saturated adsorptive capacity. The practical maximum adsorption is 402.5 mg·g-1and theoretic result agree well.
