Reconfigurable machine tool combines the advantages of wide manufacturing ranges of flexible manufacturing systems and high manufacturing effective and low cost of dedicated manufacturing systems. When the market varies, reconfigurable machine tool can response to new customer needs rapidly through reconfiguration, which shorter manufacturing period, higher manufacturing efficiency and lower manufacturing cost. However, technologies of reconfigurable machine tool are not mature yet, and there still exists many problems to be solved.In the paper, research has been expanded on:craft planning based on manufacturing feature element, kinematic function scheme modeling for reconfigurable machine tool based on tool-feature position and pose, scheme assessment for design of reconfigurable machine tool based on multi-attribute decision making. Function module called "scheme design and optimization for reconfigurable machine tool" has been developed on the theory basis discussed above, and verified in the enterprise daily manufacturing works.The main content of the paper is shown as follows:Chapter 1 analyzes the characteristics and development situation of reconfigurable machine tool, study on the present development situation of craft planning based on manufacturing feature element, kinematic function scheme modeling for reconfigurable machine tool based on tool-feature position and pose, scheme assessment for design of reconfigurable machine tool based on multi-attribute decision making in and abroad. In the end, research background, content and organization structure are presented.Chapter 2 analyzes manufacturing craft features for parts and define information element. Relationship charts of manufacturing features are constructed and craft planning technology based on manufacturing feature element is proposed. According to relationships between manufacturing features, certain calculations are made to have the relationship charts evolved automatically, which realize reconstruction of manufacturing feature relationship models and finish the craft planning of the parts. Chapter 3 analyzes the relationship between manufacturing characteristics and manufacturing tools about parts, solves for kinematic function scheme to obtain the distribution formula. Movement type, direction and transfer feature information of modules are described accurately according to dual motion feature domain and movement transfer domain. As a result, knowledge expression for scheme and support to kinematic scheme design process are realized. In addition, methodologies for movement decomposition and module combination are proposed, which provide knowledge support of subsequent design and scheme assessment.Chapter 4 analyzes module similarity between reconfigurable machine tool and prototype machine tool. Three key indexes:similarity, economics and complexity are established to describe the design scheme of the reconfigurable machine tool. Multi-attribute decision making approach is adopted assess and order the schemes of reconfigurable machine tools. Finally, the best design scheme can be obtained.Chapter 5 develops the function modules to solve and optimize the kinematic function schemes of reconfigurable machine tool related to a practical machine tool project, which validate its effectiveness and feasibility, and make the theory into manufacturing power.Chapter 6 concludes the work of the paper, and gives the prospect and further explored direction.
