The oil swelling rubber (OSR) and the water swelling rubber (WSR) were studied in this paper. First,the preparation methods of OSR and WSR were studied. The rubber materials were required to have not only greater expansion in the oil or water but also good mechanical properties and high-temperature resistance.For the preparation experiments of OSR, The results showed that EPDM 4703 (high mooney viscosity and low content of ethylene) was the best choice for basic material. With the increase of cross-linking agent, the oil absorptivity of vulcanizates was decreased ,but the hardness, tensile strength, modulus and other mechanical properties were improved.The structure of cross-linked network, oil absorptivity and mechanical properties were improved obviously with the addition of TAIC to OSR. With the increase of paraffin oil ,the oil absorptivity of vulcanizate was significantly improved , but the mechanical properties, especially the hardness declined. With the addition of PL-400 to OSR, the mechanical properties of vulcanizate were significantly improved ,but oil absorptivity declined. Carbon black played a very good role on properties of vulcanizate, the oil absorptivity was improved with the increase of carbon black N550. EPDM/POE could improve physico-mechanical characteristics and heat-aging performance. the oil absorptivity ,particularly at high temperature, was significantly improved ,With the addition of The reclaimed IIR to EPDM vulcanizate, but the mechanical characteristics of vulcanizate declined. with the increase of zinc methacrylate, the tensile strength, modulus and hardness of vulcanizate were improved. in diesel fuel, The oil absorptivity of vulcanizate at first increased and then decreased ,the expansion reached maximum ,when the content of zinc methacrylate was 10 phr.For water swelling rubber, the effect of absorbent-resins and polyurethane on water swelling ability was studied. The results showed that the maximum expansion rate of volume decreased gradually ,with the increase of DCP,when the absorbent resin content was fixed. with the increase of TAIC ,the expansion ratio of volume increased firstly then decreased .When TAIC content was 1.5 phr, the volume expansion ratio was maximum. the more absorbent resins (PAANa)in vulcanizates, the higher volume expansion and mass loss . the effect of silica content on the volume expansion ratio was not obvious ,when the silica was used alone in the formula.with the increase of silica ,the mass loss of vulcanizate reduced. By adding carbon black to silica in the water swelling rubber , the volume expansion ratio of vulcanizate increased firstly then decreased, when the ratio of silica and carbon black is 24/24, the volume expansion ratio was maximum.The effect of the three factors (vulcanizing system, super absorbent polymer and polyurethane) on the volume expansion ratio was studied by orthogonal testing design .The results showed that the effects of super absorbent polymer on water expansion ratio were obvious. The contribution of the vulcanizating systems and polyurethane to the water expantion ratio was not obvious.
