In this paper, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) functionalized ABS (ABS-g-GMA) core-shell modifiers were used to toughen PC, PBT and PC/PBT. The mechanical properties, compatibility and morphology were studied with a variety of factors of the blends. The main purpose is to find a suitable toughener, and the right blend compositon to improve the performance of PC/PBT alloy. The results are as follows:1 Mechanical property tests of PC2405/PBT2100/ABS and PC2805/PBT2100/ABS blends showed that PC2405/PBT2100/ABS blends had better mechanical properties. When the content of ABS was 10wt%, the blend showed the best notched impact toughness. PC/PBT blends with no toughener addition had very poor mechanical properties.2 PC/ABS and PC/ABS-g-GMA blends were partially miscible. The toughening effect was different when the samples with different thickness. For the standard samples,5wt% toughener can play a toughening effect. As for the thin samples, the impact strength decreased with the increase of toughener content.3 The toughening effect of ABS on PBT was poor and the samples always fractured in brittle way. The toughness of PBT was improved significantly by ABS-g-GMA.With the increase of ABS-g-GMA content, the impact strength became larger. The notched impact strength of pure PBT standard sample was 12J/m, but when the content of ABS-g-GMA was 25wt%, notched impact strength of 347J/m was achieved.4 ABS showed the obvious toughening effect on PC/PBT blends. The introduction of PBT not only enhanced the compatibility of blends, lower cost, but also improved the processing flow properties. Activation energy and activation volume of the blends decreased with the increase of PBT content. So PBT promoted the toughening ability of the blends. DMA analysis indicaded that glass transition temperature of PC phase in PC/PBT/ABS blends shift to lower temperature since the introduction of PBT due to the increase of compatibility. SEM results showed that PBT introduction promoted much uniform dispersion.5 The toughening of PC/PBT blends by introduction of ABS-g-GMA was obvious. when the content of PBT was 30wt%, notched impact strength of 867J/m was achieved. The introduction of PBT helped to improve the compatibility and processing flow properties.
