The epoxy functionalized acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS-g-GMA)coreshell impact modifiers with different core-shell ratios were synthesized by seed emulsion polymerization.The un-grafted segments in ABS-g-GMA were separated out by acetone and ultra-centrifugation.The remaining substances were ABS-g-GMA'.The modifiers were used to toughen poly(butylene terephthalate)(PBT).The effects of the core-shell ratio on the mechanical properties and compatibility of the blends were investigated.And the effects of un-grafted segments on toughening effect of the modifier were investigated.The toughening effect was investigated by blending different core-shell ratio of ABS-g-GMA modifier with PBT.It was found that the ABS-g-GMA modifier could toughen PBT.When the modifier had the optimum core-shell ratio,the toughening efficiency was the highest.and the notch impact strength of the blend was the highest when the core-shell ratio was 60/40.With the increase of core-shell ratio,the yield strength and elongation at break of the blend decrease.Moreover,the elastic modulus and compatibility showed no obvious variation with core-shell ratio.The toughening effect was investigated by blending different core-shell ratio of ABS-g-GMA' modifier with PBT.The results showed that the modifier also could toughen PBT.When the core-shell was 50/50,the blends had the highest toughening efficiency.The elastic modulus and yield strength of the blends increased and elongation at break of the blends decrease with the core-shell ratio of the modifier increased.But the compatibility had little change.The effects of un-grafted segments in the modifier were investigated by compared the toughening effect of ABS-g-GMA and ABS-g-GMA' with the same core-shell ratio.The results showed that the elastic modulus and yield strength decreased after removing un-grafted segments,but the elongation at break increased.The effect of un-grafted segments in different modifier were varied on the impact strength,and un-grafted segments could improve the toughening effect of the modifier with the core-shell ratio of 60/40,but reduce the toughening effect of the modifier with the core-shell ratio of70/30 and 80/20.Moreover,it had unobvious effect on the compatibility.For ABS-g-GMA modifier with core-shell ratio of 60/40,when the content of ungrafted segments of 5% in modifier,the modifier had the best toughening effect,and the impact strength of blends were the highest.At this time,the content of un-grafted segments is also the content of un-grafted segments in modifier by synthesized.In addition,the content of un-grafted segments had no obvious effect on the elastic modulus,yield strength and compatibility of the blends,but decrease the elongation at break.
